How to write an insightful review 101

Amazon appears to be fed up with people pencil whipping reviews with garbage. Amazon is the reason that people are leaving badly written reviews but that is for another post.

what does being insightful mean?

Insightfulness is the ability articulate ideas and information about a product that other people might not notice. Things others do not see. Unexpected uses.

First lets look at what you should NOT do in a review.

Do not use any marketing sounding words in you review. words like:

game changer, stunning, amazing, incredible, awesome, beautifully designed, a breeze, versatility, convenient (or any of its forms), stands out, faith, joy, premium, vibrant, bold, inspired, flair, or any other overly fancy, and unusual words that you would not use in every day speech.

Do not use em dashes — the long form of a dash -, chatgpt and other AI use this. most normal people do not.

Do not start out a review with I blah blah, or this blah blah if you can possibly help it. if it is not important to the product and your use of it don't talk about it. Generally no one cares why you got a product.

Do not talk about your kids, pets, or husband in any great detail. no one cares.

Do not use the suggested words or ideas that amazon offers when you are typing your review. Using them is the opposite of insightfulness.

Do not ramble.

Do not use any artificial intelligence to write, or analyze your review. At this time all AI in use is trained on the writings of other people. AI has no real world critical thinking abilities, and no idea how to think outside the box. AI is the polar opposite of insightful. It can write perfect marketing geared descriptions of a product and how to use it, but not being able to use a product itself, it cannot know what will actually happen when using a product. AI is trash. Do not comment about how good you think it is, those comments will not be posted.

Do not write reviews that sound like reviews. Read your review. if it sounds like something written on the back of a package, or some website trying to sell you something? it is NOT a review it is a sales pitch. We are NOT trying to sell a product. We are here to confirm, or refute claims in the listing. Tell people about what the product actually looks like, and how it really works.

Do not make statements like:

It works, It fits me/some device, I like/dislike the color, or any vague statements that give zero information to the person reading your review. These types of statements give zero context that a person can compare to themselves.

Do not write anything that is in the listing or product description, you are wasting everyone's time.

Do not post pictures that have no use, or are basically the same as the listing shows. Same for videos.

Do not rant.

Do not mention politics unless you are reviewing a political item, even then focus on the item.

Do not violate community guidelines go and read what those are on amazons site.

Do not use bullet points AI uses this a lot.

OK OK WE GET IT, BUT WHAT SHOULD WE WRITE?

it is recommended that you put some of the product description in the title or in the actual review.

Word salad 12v lifepo4 battery 10AH

The will let people know if your review is for the product they are looking at (more later).

Get to the point.

First thing I did is charge the battery with a lifepo4 charger, then put it on my battery capacity tester.

confirm or refute a claim or claims.

This battery exceeded 10ah I stopped the test at 10.33ah at 11.8v though the manufacturer says it can go down to 10v.

Talk about things other people might not think about.

It is a disappointment that these batteries are only rated at 1C discharge or 10 amps.
this means they cannot be used in a UPS or jumper pack.

report your findings in using the product.

The instructions say that it needs a lifepo4 charger. But I charged it after my testing with a current limited power supply set to 14.6vdc. The battery charged just fine, it charged at a constant current of 5 amps, and then when the voltage went up to 14.6 the amps held at 5 then tapered off as the internal BMS controlled the charge. shutting off the voltage when the battery fully charged. total charge time 2 hours.

do a pros and cons list, being short and to the point.

pro's:
works with all my Makita and clone batteries.
compact design is less bulky than corded.
4 nozzles though I will probably only use the concentrating, and flat nozzle.
not super heavy 3lbs 11oz (1.7 kilos) with 3ah battery attached.
very powerful blower unable to confirm wind speed but it's pretty good.
Simple controls on/off 3 speed with last setting memory.
long run time (10 to 40 minutes with 3000mah battery).
can rotate the blower fan and nozzle 270° don't know how this will be useful.
works the same or as good as a corded unit.

Con's:
membrane buttons will eventually wear out.
nozzles and extension bayonet locks could be more robust/stronger.
Very loud at highest speed very high pitch whine hearing protection recommended.

If you want to talk technical or give other information that most people might not care about put it at the end of the review.

Amp draw tested with special adapter and current limited power supply.
blower draws 4.5 amps on low for about 42 minutes runtime.
9.3amps on medium for about 16 minutes runtime.
14.3 amps on high for about 10 minutes runtime.
run times are for a 3000mah battery fully charged. lower amp hour batteries will be about half that.

I attempted to test the wind speed with my anemometer but my anemometer does not measure wind speed that high. unit has quite a high current draw at power on with high speed selected (over 15amps). Claims to have battery protection, did not try to confirm this. I run my batteries down by ear and don't wait for a protection circuit to kick in.

Write your reviews like you would tell a friend or colleague about the item. If the person who would probably be ordering the product is technical then write technical, if the person/product is not technical just write in everyday language. You are not trying to sell the product. Only simple minded people want a review that is trying to sell them something.

Test a product, sometimes this will require special equipment. Use the product for as long as it takes to reveal any problems with it. This will discussed in more detail in a later post.

Do not worry about review length sometimes you do not need to write a long review, other times that is the only thing that works.

Do not try to please everyone. There is no way to write a review that satisfies everyone.

Write what you want to see in the review don't worry about what others might want to see. Some people want more information than provided in the description, use your knowledge and expertise to report what you find, but don't go nuts.

Here is an example of a short insightful review:

word salad drain filter

Tested this for 2 weeks. it collected a ball of hair about the size of quarter. The design is such that it has somewhat large chain links so it will not clog as fast as other hair catchers, but may not catch as much.

Easy to use. I popped out the old drain grate, and placed this one over the hole. the flange was just the right size to cover the drain completely. it did not slip around, and water drains through it with no problem. even if the catcher filled up completely with hair the design would allow water to still drain through the holes in the flange.

This is the best hair catcher I have found so far.

Note the absence of overly dramatic wording. Ease of understanding, Pertinent information has been shared. subjective information is left out. Note that I did not say I like the way it looks because what I like and others might like will never be the same, the picture of the product is in the listing and it is up to the reader to decide if they like how it looks. They may not like the way stainless steel looks. I did not give measurements or any information that was already in the listing. I confirmed claims. The last line is not needed but is at the end where most people will probably not read.

Now lets look at a long technical review with comments in red as we go through it:

wordsaladname and model number Digital greenhouse temperature controller good we are not looking at shoes

First (since the manual is not clear) press the up and down arrow touch sensors for 3 seconds to change from Celsius to Fahrenheit. Important info the manual left out that someone might want to know about immediately when they get it.

Pros:
temperature seems to be accurate.
Accuracy can be extremely important
Easy to read, bright screen, and large letters.
somewhat easy to program, though manual could be more detailed.
the manual is rarely available to preview when it should always be available
has an actual website (listed in instructions) but not much available there.
is rated for 9 amps/1100 watts and I would not exceed that.
lots of things sold on amazon are dangerously over rated
temperature sensor claims it is waterproof (I did not test this).
waterproof and water resistant are very different, water proof means it can be fully submerged testing this could ruin the product

Cons:
temperature calibration can only be done in +/- 1 degree steps.
this is very important in a device like this some people may need more accuracy and this was not clearly stated in the listing
large amount of thermal latency in the temperature probe, it can take a minute or 2 for temperature reading to catch up to actual temperature.
can be good can be bad but people need to know
no listed ratings for maximum horsepower, tungsten, or resistive loads for the internal relays. Relay specs are important for different load capabilities. incandescent/tungsten lamps draw very large currents at startup. different types of fan motors are harder to switch off than others. Relay contacts can be welded with excessive high loads.
people may not realize this and could result in the device failing or catching fire if used with the wrong device
control panel and sockets are not waterproof, keep out of rain.
High temperature alarm does not seem to keep its setting after power failure. I suspect low temperature alarm is the same (not needed, did not test).
keeping settings is important especially if the process of setup takes a long time

without proper specifications, I recommend:
this info is for people who are less technical
Derate max load by 4 amps if attaching tungsten lamps to the unit.
Derate by 4 amps for Switching power supply loads.
only put a maximum 1/4 horsepower motor on either plug socket.
setting the heating to a couple of degrees below desired temperature because of latency in the probe. Same for cooling, set the temperature higher than needed, then observe the results (if temperature control is critical). Adjust accordingly.

This unit is not rated to run an air conditioner of any size and will overheat. It will run a small 120v 3000cfm 1/4 hp evaporative cooler with no issues.
EXTREMELY IMPORTANT and should have been in the listing but sellers just want to sell and do not care if your house burns down

Can also be used to only control A heater or a cooler. just set for temperature and connect heating or cooling to the appropriate socket. Unit will de-energize one or the other socket and energize the other socket even if nothing is connected.
Some people may think that because it is sold a certain way that is the only way it can be used

Not bad for two Jackson's.

indicates how much I paid without specifically mentioning price, in this case the product price double after I did my review. more on reporting on the price of an object in another post.

When doing reviews of clothing products, put your height, weight, inseam, waist size, neck size, shoe size, bust or chest measurements, cup size, and any other measurement that is relevant. Are you fat, skinny, or is there anything unusual about your body type. Saying a product is true to size, or fits you is MEANINGLESS without something people can compare to. No one cares about your personal vanity t

hey need to know if a product will fit THEM. You are the guinea pig. Do not give low stars to products that you ordered that you did not like the color, style, that it is unflattering, or anything else that will make people wonder why you ordered it. It's one thing if you ordered blue and got red but if they only offered one color and you don't like that color... DON'T ORDER IT! If you do order it don't complain about that. This goes for any product if you don't like anything cosmetic about it you should not order it. Same with scented things.

Same with food items. If you did not take the time to find out what was in it before you ordered it that is NOT THE SELLERS FAULT. Even if you are allergic unless an allergen was undeclared and you are too dumb to know that egg noodles contain egg or whatever.

Do not dock stars because of your mistakes. If a product is as described, and on the up and up then they should get a 4 or 5 star review. You can talk about not liking this or that, or being allergic, or something not being flattering or whatever but those things are not the fault of the seller you don;t punish sellers for your failures and shortcomings.
